- Generate a list of possible explanations for what could explain the outcomes of both “experiments.” (“hidden spoon” and “hidden book”). The list should be a continuum from most paranormal or magical to most rational.
- In what ways does Twyman control the “find the book” test? List the restrictions and limits placed on where the subject can place the book. How would these limits help Twyman locate where she has hidden the book?
- What evidence in the video itself suggests a more rational explanation for the events of the two experiments? (Consider the implied or real restrictions placed on the participants.)
- If we wanted to really test the these claims scientifically, what would the experimental protocol look like? Write out the guidelines or for such a study. What restrictions would you place on Twyman?
- In both “tests,” Twyman tells the participants that they are the ones leading him to the spoon or book. In other words, they have power. Why is it important that participants know this? (Hint: consider how an audience “collaborates” with a stage magician or hypnotist… what is the unspoken arrangement there?)
